October Madness Invades the Mighty Wildcat Band Print E-mail

Just in case you haven’t noticed, your marching band has been busy! The month of October has been packed with competitions, shows, homecoming and halftime performances at football games.

So far this month, the LH band won grand champion honors at the Midlothian Marching Competition on Saturday, October 4th at Midlothian ISD Stadium. After enduring a long 14-hour day of both prelims and finals, Lake Highlands surpassed 14 other regional bands in overall points late Saturday night to reach the top spot. In addition to the top award, the LH marchers earned best overall honors in color guard, drum line, marching drill, winds and best in class for their division. “And, to top it all off, they only put two-thirds of their show on the field tonight”, said Jeff Bradford, Director of Bands, referencing the fact that Lake Highlands, like many schools, had not perfected their entire show at that point of the season. In addition, LH placed 5th overall at the very competitive Plano East Marching Invitational.

LH made a perfect “all ones” at the biennial UIL All-Region competition held on October 15 at Mesquite Memorial Stadium. This perfect rating allowed LH to progress to the All-Area UIL competition on October 25, where they competed well enough during afternoon prelims to earn a spot in the finals that evening. Although they did not earn one of three available spots to represent their area in the All-State competition in San Antonio, their ability to make it to All-Area finals made the marching season a huge success this year. Hey band, way to go!

In addition to competitions, band members were busy with the annual Varsity Revue talent show held during homecoming week. This year’s show, entitled “America in Revue”, carried an election theme throughout the evening. Emcees, members of the LHHS marching band, performed skits between acts related to the upcoming elections. Numerous individual and small groups performed song and dance acts during both evenings. In addition, the varsity cheerleaders, Highlandettes, Wranglers and the high school marching band, including its colorguard and drumline, performed for the event. Proceeds from the two nights will support the music education programs for hundreds of students at the high school, two junior highs and nine elementary schools in the Lake Highlands area cluster.

Thank you marchers for a fantastic show this season!

P.S. I do want to give a special thank-you to Pam Ruatta, the LHABC’s Mum Queen, and to all of her dominion far and wide for an enormous effort yet again this year for the creation and assembly of the mum supply for homecoming. They looked great!

GO BAND!!!
